Question:
A food allergy is an abnormal immune response to a specific food. When someone with a food allergy eats the food, their immune system overreacts and produces antibodies called immunoglobulin E (IgE). These antibodies bind to the food and trigger the release of histamine and other chemicals. Histamine causes the symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing, and anaphylaxis.
Lactose intolerance is not a food allergy. It is a condition in which people have difficulty digesting lactose, the sugar found in milk and other dairy products. People with lactose intolerance may experience digestive symptoms such as gas, bloating, diarrhea, and abdominal pain after eating dairy products.
